Peptide Basics: What They Are, Safety, Cost & Storage

New to peptides? This MLCR SCTY peptide guide covers the essentials: what peptides are, the difference between prescription and research peptides, and what to know about legality, pricing, and storage.

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Some act as biological messengers, helping regulate processes such as appetite, metabolism, and hormone signaling.

Peptide discussions often include GLP-1 medications, compounds studied for tissue repair, and growth hormone–related peptides. However, each compound has different effects and supporting evidence. Research findings do not automatically establish benefits or safety in humans.

Peptide legality depends on the compound, product, intended use, and location. Certain medications containing semaglutide or tirzepatide are FDA-approved for specific conditions. That approval does not extend to every product sold under those ingredient names.

Products labeled “research use only” are not approved for human treatment. Off-label prescribing of an approved medication is different from using an unapproved research chemical. Always verify current requirements before purchasing or sourcing peptides.

How Much Do Peptides Cost?

Peptide prices vary by compound, formulation, quantity, and source. For prescription treatment, insurance coverage, pharmacy pricing, consultations, and savings-program eligibility can affect your total cost.

Research peptide prices may reflect synthesis complexity, testing, and quantity. A lower vial price does not establish equivalent quality or make a research product a substitute for prescription medication.

Peptide Safety & Storage

Peptide safety and storage requirements are product-specific. Follow the exact manufacturer or pharmacy instructions for temperature, light protection, preparation, and expiration.

There is no universal “two to four weeks after mixing” rule. Even different formulations of the same peptide medication can have different storage requirements.

Before considering peptide treatment: Speak with a licensed healthcare provider about potential risks, medication interactions, and appropriate options.
